Two friends are on an unconventional journey of self-discovery in Netflix comedy series BONDiNG
Bonding, or BONDiNG, is the upcoming Netflix Original comedy series created, written, and directed by Rightor Doyle, who is best known as an actor and currently appears in HBO’s hit Barry.
It stars Zoe Levin (Palo Alto, Red Band Society) as a New York graduate student who earns a living as a dominatrix. However, in order to grow her business, she needs an assistant who she can implicitly trust, and therefore her reluctant but money-starved gay best friend Pete (Brendan Scannell – Heathers) to help her out.
The official plot synopsis is as follows:
Hilarious Chains, Whips & Jokes! For college graduate / domineering Tiff (Zoe Levin) and cash-strapped gay best friend Pete (Brendan Scannell), S&M is a business, not a pleasure. Well there might be a little pleasure. Their professional relationship redefines their friendship, but above all helps them to find each other.
While there is nothing particularly NSFW in what you’re about to see, I’m still going to give the disclaimer just because the topic can be a bit risky for some work environments. With that said, let’s take a look:
Let’s eliminate the obvious. Yes, Zoe Levin looks really good in leather, but even though you’re going to see her dressed this way quite often, this show isn’t all about titillation. These are two people who learn to let go of their preconceived notions about sexuality, to get rid (or on) of certain shackles both literally and metaphorically, and to uncover themselves – albeit in unconventional ways.
I’ll definitely watch this because it looks different and weirdly funny, but I have a sneaky suspicion that it’ll be a little tame and not really push that far – and I guess that’s on purpose in order to avoid the aforementioned titillation overwhelming the actual message of the show. Levin and Scannell both seem to be performing well, and with just seven episodes, the show won’t have time to exhaust its premises or exceed its reception.
What do you think?
BONDiNG is available on Netflix right now, as it premiered yesterday April 24th. It also stars Kevin Kane, Micah Stock, Stephanie Styles, Theo Stockman, D’Arcy Carden and Eric Berryman.
