Speaking of music: Young Antiques – WABE
Young Antiques is an indie rock and pop power trio from Atlanta. The band consists of singer-songwriter and guitarist Blake Rainey, bassist and vocalist Blake Paris and drummer John Speaks. Rainey describes their concerts as “loud and energetic, sweaty and soulful, like a good rock ‘n roll show should be”.
The two founding Blakes, Rainey and Paris, grew up together in Cedartown, Georgia, making music together since they were 11 years old. John Speaks joined to form the trio in the early 2000s, which has gone on since releasing five full albums.
As a songwriter, Rainey cites influences such as Nick Lowe, Neil Young and Elvis Costello, and like these songwriting strongholds, he often exploits unusual subject matter for inspiration in his lyrics.
“I try to write lyrics about things that haven’t been explored too much, like a love song that takes a different avenue to make it your own,” Rainey says. “Sometimes you have to write a song that has been pretty well explored. The trick is to make it unique, to make it sound like you, not someone else.
Featured track ‘Armies in the Alley’ tells the story of two lovers on the run in a dystopian future, plunging through back alleys to escape the henchmen of their overbearing overlords – Rainey calls it a “film noir bar ballad “.
Young Antiques are planning a full new LP release next year, and in the meantime, fans can catch a live show at the Star Community Bar in Little Five Points on July 29. Young Antiques is on Instagram at @youngantiques.
