‘Puttin’ On The Dawg ‘art exhibition to open July 17 at CAMP

The Plainview Museum of Contemporary Art (CAMP) is gearing up for its first post-COVID art exhibit.

Puttin ‘On The Dawg: PHS All School Reunion Art Show will kick off with a reception and garden party on July 17, the same day as the Plainview High School All School Reunion. The museum is at 219 E. 6th Street.

The exhibit will feature works by over 25 artists who are former Bulldogs of Plainview.

Kick-off is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a free reception, garden party and live musical entertainment. There will be champagne – donated by Wine for the People and Rae Wilson – and hors d’oeuvres. A performance by Lee’s and Co. will close the festivities at CAMP.

Puttin ‘On The Dawg is scheduled to close on August 30. The CAMP is open every weekend from Thursday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It is free and open to all.

CAMP is funded by the Sybil B. Harrington Grant through the Community Foundation of West Texas and by public and private donations.

Here is a list of artists who will be featured on the show (as stated in a CAMP press release):

Philana oliphant Pace has exhibited his work nationally and internationally and is in the permanent collections of Texas Tech University and the Wichita Falls Art Museum. She has received numerous awards including Women in the Arts from the Women’s Foundation of East Texas and is currently an art professor at Tyler Junior College.

Van Redin has shot commercials for more than 75 major feature films including The Lord of the Rings, Rudy, Office Space, Rushmore, All the Pretty Horses as well as the television series The Long Road Home, The Son and The Leftovers. He was the house photographer at the State Capitol. His work will soon be exhibited and permanently archived in the prestigious Wittliff Collection at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.

Carrie Perkins Garrott has been included in various publications around the world including “Dreaming Jewelry” and “The Art of Jewelry: Paper Jewelry”. His work is in private and public collections including the Museum of Art and Design in New York, NY and the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin.

Jon whitfill has exhibited nationally and internationally, spanning seventeen states, France and China and is the founder of RJP Nomadic Gallery, Earthbound Moon, Culture Laboratory Collective, The Button Project and Free-Range Creatives. His sculpture can be seen in many private and public spaces, including Texas Tech University, CAMP, and Delta State in Mississippi.

Marc Hilliard went from a full-time farmer to a full-time art professor at Wayland Baptist University. His main studio is located in WBU’s Harral Arts Complex, where he continues to sculpt and share his artistic talents and inspiration with a new generation of artists.

Kelly alison has exhibited works in the National Art Museums of Shanghai, China and Lima, Peru, PS1 New York and the Museum of Fine Art Houston, where she was recognized as a member of the “Houston School”. Alison was a project manager for the Houston International Performance Art Biennale 2012 and 2014 and she is currently working on her GREAT ART IN A SMALL TOWN project.

Rodney watson is the former Director of Museums at Wayland Baptist University. He played a central role in organizing the Jimmy Dean Wing at the Llano Estacado Museum and the much anticipated World War I Symposium exhibition in Wayland. He is known for his paintings and drawings of Western art.

Chris Perez is the owner and founder of RUDC Studios on Ash Street in downtown Plainview. He studied broadcasting at West Texas State University, works as a musician and graphic designer, creates an 806 podcast and has just opened a POP CULTURE VINTAGE SHOP.

Pedro Salinas is the owner and founder of Bomb-O Pinstriping. In the tradition of Rat Fink and Kustom Kulture artists, Salinas roams its hand-painted hotrods and performs its vintage lettering and stripes throughout the region.

Robyn barrett has strong ties to the Amarillo art scene. Self-taught, his work has been exhibited there at the Red Gallery and CaRLA and at the Tornado Gallery in Lubbock Texas. As a member of the CAMP Board of Trustees, Barrett played a central role in the museum’s work with children as part of the Juvenile Justice System skateboard project and the Yellow City Art exhibition.

Angel Azua graduated from Wayland in 2016 and has been teaching art at Plainview High School for the past five years. Azua has exhibited at the Plainview Museum of Contemporary Art and is the creator of one of the East End murals sponsored by the Community Foundation of West Texas.

Rigo rey is the founder, owner and inventor of Art / Horror The Blackness. Rey has taught at Coronado Middle School for 25 years and is a State graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma. Rey was the creator of CAMP’s first East End mural called “Seed,” sponsored by the Community Foundation of West Texas.

Phyllis Dayton Wall is a columnist and mega-supporter of all things Plainview, Wall was central to the founding of Plainview Skate Park, Duck Pond and the new downtown mural created by Alfonso Garcia. As president and tour de force of the Plainview Downtown Association, she has overseen dozens of projects.

Monica michelle plata has worked as a professional lifestyle and editorial photographer for over three years and is the founder of the A&L photography group. Prior to taking full-time photography, she was a VA nursing aide at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) – US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Michel nagar studied at Pepperdine University in California, speaks Japanese, lived and studied in Japan, and currently lives and does art in Los Angeles.

Gilberto Barrientos is a self-taught artist, tattoo artist, and carpenter who joined the Navy shortly after 911. A US Navy veteran, Barrientos currently lives and works in Tulia, TX.

Chris Gomez is a self-taught Banksy fan who works in the tradition of Chicano graffiti. His main goal is to create his works of art on his vintage bikes and old custom trucks.

Chris Vargas is a self-taught artist who has been tattooing for 25 years. He also does custom leatherwork, makes custom knives, and does woodworking and carpentry.


Rudy Maldonado is another self-taught artist who has his studio in Plainview. He does tattoos and body art at Loyalty Tattoo Studio and has worked for both Touch of Ink and Sinfully Yours.

Victor Cavazos is a street artist who owns the operations of the VIP Auto and Bike Detail Shop. He is also a tireless supporter of the Texas Torque Show and El Rincon.

Glenda ramsower studied ceramics at the Art Center of Waco and exhibited his work in various venues across Texas, most recently at the Contemporary Art Museum Plainview.

Devin Glenn not only does wonderful works of art, but has awesome dining experience. Working as an executive chef at one of Austin’s top restaurants, The Frog and Bull and six years as a chef at Salt Lick BBQ. Glenn received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas State University and his Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts.

Tisa whitfill received the Plainview Civic Theater Best Director Award for “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” in 2002. She also co-directed Shorts: Sweet Little Sixteen at the Wayland Baptist Theater.

Jenny Cypert Ragland is a self-taught artist who has taught at Plainview Christian Academy for the past seven years. His graduate studies were in the field of chemistry and biology.

Renee robison retired after 36 years as a retail buyer. His works have been exhibited at the Craft Guild of Dallas, Café Izmir in Dallas, Northaven United Methodist Church, Texas Discovery Gardens, and the Goodrich Gallery in Dallas, among others.

Tonda Turpin Howard lives and makes art in Dallas where his work can be seen at the Continental Gin Building. Howard studied at the University of Texas-Austin and Texas Tech University. His decidedly modern technique is carried out in the 14th century style called Verre Eglomise ‘(reverse painting on glass).

Christophe lopez is a self-taught mystery artist who has been making art since the age of 8. His work has previously been exhibited as part of a program at the Plainview Art Alley Museum of Contemporary Art.
