June Antiques Auction at Greenslade Taylor Hunt

This month’s antiques auction at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s octagon salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, sees a particularly strong furniture section.

While larger, darker pieces of furniture are still much less coveted than they once were, the market is strong for more desirable items.

The June auction features a number of highly decorative and commercial lacquered furniture, with Chinese decoration including pairs of armchairs, desks and cabinets.

There are also a few cabinets or haberdashery, which would be of interest to collectors and dealers, as well as country furniture and two chests of drawers, a lovely roll-top lady’s desk and country furniture.

One of the star lots is a Flemish cabinet, highly sculpted with mythical beasts and caryatids from the Atlas. This has a pre-sale estimate of £400-£600.

“This promises to be one of the best furniture picks in quite some time,” said reviewer Simon Rayner.

The sale is a week later than usual due to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It will take place on Thursday, June 9 from 10 a.m.

Equally desirable “retro” furniture will be on offer at July’s 20th Century Decorative Arts and Design sale. Registrations are now open for this sale which takes place on Thursday 7 July.

A host of items have already been consigned, including Ladderax, G-Plan, Ercol and Danish furniture, as well as light fixtures, ceramics, glass and other mid-century items.
