Honolulu Art Museum School reopens in fall
Newly renovated classrooms and a brand new oven welcome students to the first studio art classes in over two years.
The hallways and classrooms of the newly renovated Honolulu Museum of Art School will soon be abuzz with anticipation once again as the museum returns to studio art classes after a two-week hiatus. year. Online registration opens July 12 for museum members at the contributor level and above, and July 13 for the public. Classes begin September 1.
“We are excited to reopen,” said studio head Joseph Smeraldi. “Our faculty of full-time art instructors is developing a new curriculum inspired by and linked to the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. For students, tours of our galleries will be part of every course offering to connect the studio learning experience with a deeper understanding of art history and the creative process of artists through the ages. .
When the art school closed, HoMA had the chance to reconfigure and update its classrooms, including the addition of a glazing studio and a state-of-the-art kiln. technology. “We’ve doubled the size of the ceramics workshop and incorporated a glazing workshop,” said Aaron Padilla, director of learning and engagement. “The addition of a glaze studio is very valuable to the entire ceramic process, allowing us to focus on the critical stages of surface design and glaze techniques.”
The school’s print shop has also been modernized with a space dedicated to screen printing as well as five new relief printing presses. There is a new studio dedicated to textiles with a set of Saori crafts, two studios dedicated to general studio art, and four studios for drawing and painting.
The museum will offer classes in ceramics, printmaking, metalwork, textiles, drawing and painting, as well as a general survey art exploration class. The course program is designed for a wide range of abilities, experience and expertise.
