As of Trades: Gaffney’s Treasures and Gifts
Stephen Gaffney described himself as a normal boy from the 70s/80s – riding his bike, watching Saturday morning cartoons, playing video games and playing sports at school.
“I thought about being a paramedic, a comedian and even a pastor,” he said.
Zabrina Gaffney grew up doing a lot of crafts.
“On snowy days, I would do crafty things with my mom and fill our kitchen table,” she said. “I learned to knit when I was 3 years old. I wanted to be a teacher, and in some ways I am – as a parent and helping my clients decorate their homes. I never thought that the things I learned to do having fun with my mom would lead to what I ended up doing as a career.
Today, Stephen and Zabrina Gaffney own Gaffney’s Treasures and Gifts in Marion.
Stephen grew up in Marion, graduated from Delaware Christian School in 1988, then joined the Navy as a corpsman until 1995. After leaving the Navy, he held various jobs in a few retail stores.
“Zabrina had done craft shows and had a booth at a flea market while I was working at
different places,” he noted. “The husband of the woman who owned the flea market had passed away and she just wasn’t as interested as she had been. She approached us about taking over the flea market. I had been in management in retail and restaurant so this opportunity was very well received. We changed the store layout from a flea market to an antique shop, similar to some antique stores in Delaware.
“In November 2019, we took over the store and put together different things to make it our own,” Stephen added. “We still have vendors, but the changes that have been made have helped us achieve the style of store we’ve always wanted.”
Zabrina grew up in Marion until fifth grade, then moved to Byhalia. She graduated from North Union High School in 1991.
“Instead of finishing college, I became a full-time mother of seven,” she said. “Even then, I was still doing craft shows. Running a household helped me run a business.
“I had been doing craft shows for over 15 years and had set up a booth at a flea market for 10 years,” Zabrina continued. “The next logical step was to open our own venue. We will have been here for three years in November.
“We wanted to bring something unique and different to Marion,” added Stephen.
“The store was a blessing that fell in our laps, and we are so grateful for that,” Zabrina said. “We appreciate all the love and support we have received.”
