Annual Women in the Arts event this Friday
March 24—GRAYSON — The Grayson Gallery and Art Center will showcase local women’s talent with this month’s free F!nal Fr!day Reception, taking place from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the gallery .
The ninth annual Women in the Arts event honoring Women’s History Month will feature the works of more than 30 artists and nearly 90 original works of art, said gallery director Dan Click. Many pieces are for sale and several artists offer commissioned pieces.
Refreshments will be provided by Sheila Marie; henna tattoos will be offered by Henna Tattoos & Body Art by Maranda Knipp for a nominal fee.
Live music from $5 Red will kick off the evening; Unmanned will perform at 9 p.m.
Announcements, awards and an introduction to the history of Bobby Lee Messer’s short film “Women in the Arts” will precede a screening at 8 p.m.
The film showcases the gallery’s support for female artists across all genres.
Part of an “Art Meets Activism” funding award from the Kentucky Foundation for Women that Grayson Gallery received in 2021, the entire project was curated by lead artist Karen Combs. Additionally, a CD compilation of the music of the featured musicians was produced by David Justice of Appalachia Recording and Sound; copies will be available for pre-order for $5 each.
The film is one of three nominees in the “Film, Short and Documentary” category at the Appalachian Arts & Entertainment Awards taking place April 9 at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg.
